LRMC, GET Philippines team up for electric vehicle service

Private operator of LRT-1 Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) remains committed in working towards its vision of integrated mobility as it partners with Global Electric Transport (GET) Philippines, a Mobility-as-a-Service company engaged in providing a world-class, emissions-free transport system.

Under the strategic partnership, GET brings in its extensive experience in the operation of an integrated passenger and fleet management system for the shuttle service to benefit LRT-1 passengers. The shuttle service will feature the Community Optimized Managed Electric Transport (COMET) minibuses.

COMET electric minibuses are air-conditioned, fully electric, and zero-emission, with a capacity of 30 passengers and travel range of over 100 kilometers on a single full charge. They are also equipped with on-board cameras, media system, display monitors, Internet connectivity, as well as wheelchair slot and retractable electric ramp for Persons with Disabilities.

“We are excited to be partnering with LRMC to be able to provide green and affordable transport solutions to every Filipino,” Mr. Tony Olaes, GET Worldwide Chairman, said.

For the pilot implementation, the shuttle service will be between LRT-1 EDSA Station and the Manila Bay ASEANA area with designated loading and unloading points along Macapagal Boulevard until Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX). For the second phase, the route will extend from LRT-1 EDSA Station to the Makati Central Business District.

“At LRMC, we are always on the lookout on how we can better serve our passengers and make their commute more convenient. LRT-1 passengers will also get to enjoy the first end-to-end emissions-free transport system in the Philippines as both LRT-1 and COMET help in reducing carbon footprint. LRMC has made a commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions, and part of this is adopting the use of digital management systems and promoting zero-emission transport solutions. Our partnership with GET aligns well with LRMC’s sustainability initiatives, and is anchored on UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 13 (Climate Action),” LRMC President and CEO Juan F. Alfonso shared.

LRT-1 passengers can experience more seamless, comfortable, and convenient transport feeder service to and from select LRT-1 stations by signing up to become members of the LRT-1 Riders Club on the GETPASS App available for download from Google Play and App Store.

Membership passes for the LRT-1 Riders Club come in the following amounts and validity of unlimited rides: Bronze – Php 50 (1 day pass), Silver – Php 150 (1 week pass), and Gold – Php 500 (1 month pass). The membership pass also provides access to ride the COMET buses in other routes within the GET Philippines network.

As a special promotional offer, LRT-1 Riders Club members can avail of FREE UNLIMITED RIDES on the COMET electric bus through the GETPASS App starting 30 March 2022 until 17 April 2022.

COMET electric buses operate from 4am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday excluding holidays.

The story on how EJ Obiena vaulted over controversy

Asia’s no. 1 pole vaulter, the Philippines Ernest John Obiena is expected to join the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan.

The Philippines’ top pole vaulter and Olympian EJ Obiena faced a challenging moment when he became the subject of a controversial accusation last October, 2023.

However, the 29-year-old athlete demonstrated grace under pressure, addressing the claims with professionalism and composure. His dignified response not only refuted the allegations, but also earned widespread praise. Ultimately, the accuser issued a public apology, acknowledging the false nature of the claims against him.

Behind the scenes, Obiena’s coach and mentor, James Michael “Jim” Lafferty, played a vital role in guiding the athlete through the ordeal.

Lafferty, a seasoned executive coach and motivational speaker, provided strategic PR and crisis management support to help Obiena navigate the situation effectively. Despite these hurdles, Obiena rose to become the world’s No. 2 pole vaulter, Asia’s top pole vaulter, a member of the six-meter club, and now a two-time Olympian.

Agoda: Cebu is tourist favorite to welcome ‘The Year of the Snake’

As the Lunar New Year approaches, digital travel platform Agoda unveils Cebu to be the most sought-after destination for international visitors celebrating the start of ‘The Year of the Snake’ in the Philippines. Agoda further reports that, based on accommodation searches made on the platform, Manila is the top-searched domestic destination, with Hong Kong being the most popular among Filipino travelers looking to spend the Lunar New Year holiday abroad.

The archipelago draws the most visitors from South Korea, United States and mainland China. For Filipinos looking to celebrate ‘The Year of the Snake’ abroad, Hong Kong slithers into the lead with a 120% growth in accommodation searches compared to the previous year, overtaking Tokyo. Overall, outbound accommodation searches increased by 67%, indicating Filipino travelers’ growing desire to spend the holiday period abroad.

PAL Interclub’s return to Bacolod celebrates triumph of human spirit

When the Philippine Airlines (PAL) Interclub returns to Bacolod next month, the triumph of the human spirit will be at the back of most players’ minds as the last time the event was held there, action at Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club and Bacolod Golf and Country Club was one of the last events held before COVID-19 ground all of sports in the world to a halt within the next few days.

Less than a week after Manila Southwoods and Canlubang won the Men’s Regular and Seniors divisions titles, respectively, that lockdowns were ordered worldwide because of the pandemic that would drag for more than two years.

And from Feb. 7 to 21, the courses formerly known as Marapara and Binitin will again be the venues for the event’s 76th playing where Southwoods shoots for a fourth straight crown and Del Monte a repeat of the upset it posted on home turf last year in Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon.

“Bacolod has been the site of many memorable Interclub championships and we are sure of having the same keen competition this year,” PAL president Stanley K. Ng said. “As we return to the City of Smiles, let’s also celebrate the triumph of the human spirit through the sport we love as we wish every team the best out there next month.”

Known as the country’s unofficial team golf championship, the Interclub was forced to take a two-year leave because of the pandemic and resumed in 2023 in Cebu where Southwoods again ruled regular play and Luisita dislodged Canlubang.

Seniors action gets going first on Feb. 10, with the men starting their 72-hole championship eight days later. 

Competition in the 55-and-over division is deemed to be a wide-open race this year with some of the talents that have beefed up Cangolf and Luisita either begging off or playing for other squads.

Canlubang and Luisita have combined to win a total of 29 titles, with the Sugar Barons holding an 11-5 edge since 2006 after snapping the Luisitans’ six-year reign that started in 2006.

In 24 years, only Del Monte was able to break that dual stranglehold of Senior play, and the Bukidnon-based bets will come to Bacolod with basically the same lineup that posted that upset last year.
